Determination of Optimum Characteristics of Feeder Service for a Public Transit Route
Summary
The success of a public transit project (such as Light Rail Transit) would depend mainly on the
connectivity of the station locations to other connections (such as buses, vans, taxis etc.), residences
and office places. One of the main concepts that are brought forward is the feeder services, where the
feeder vehicles would take passenger to and from the transit stop/station and drop them to their desired
origins and destinations.
This research would be highlighting the major factors that should be taken into consideration in
establishing a proper feeder service network. The research would determine on how to establish the best
route and catchment for the feeder vehicles, the frequency and the size of the vehicles which would be most beneficial to the passengers and operators.
A theoretical model will be developed using analytical techniques and the model would be applied to the Colombo Light Rail Transit (LRT) project. The outcomes of the results will be highly beneficial to the related departments & ministries, Ministry of Megapolis, National Transport Commission, Road Development Authority, Ministry of Transport and also for future researches.
