Summary

This research can produce a comprehensive database for adaptation of Mechanistic Pavement Design in local construction industry by optimizing conservative and economical perspective of designs. It will save lot of money for the sector by reducing material usage and improving available materials to satisfy available designs. Further it can be used to evaluate cost effectiveness of alternative methods that are traditionally rejected due to high expected cost, for instance, soil stabilization. Currently finding of good materials for road construction has become difficult and adjustments for proposed designs will be highly appreciated by both contractors and donor agencies of road projects in the context of cost savings

It is expected to conduct a training programme .through university of Moratuwa to dissemination of results to the industry.

Road development Authority and provincial road development agencies can use the proposed  mechanistic pavement design approach in future road infrastructure designs. Donor agencies have an intention to implement the Mechansitic pavement design in Sri Lanka. Recently, ADB has funded for a consultancy

Objectives

  1. Propose a new adaptation for DESA calculations for CIRCLY based on the sensitivity analysis of Axel Load Spectra for different pavement types, vehicle mix, and axel load distribution as a whole for local highway network in Sri Lanka.
  2. Define properties such as elastic modulus for locally available pavement construction materials including different products of asphalt, concrete and base, sub base and subgrade materials for a practicable approach to the industry with non-destructive testing and limited laboratory testing for mechanistic pavement designs using CIRCLY.
