Evaluation of water quality and macroinvertebrate compositon in relation to catchment land use practices in Umav Oya and Badulu Oya sub catchments in Upper Mahaweli Cachment Area (UMCA) in Sri Lanka

Area of Research: Natural Resources & Water Management
Status: Ongoing

Objectives

  1. a) To evaluate water quality of selected streams in Badulu Oya and Uma oya subcatchments of UMCA under different land use practices. b) To evaluate the suitability of water quality for drinking and agriculture in terms of water quality index WQI for selected reaches of streams under different land use practices. c) To inventerise the macroinvertebrate species associated with streams of the selected catchments. d) To evaluate the impact of land use on water quality, stream habitat quality and macroinvertebrate composition, species richness, EPT taxa, Shannon diversity index at different spatial scales. e) To evaluate associations between macroinvertebrate assemblages and environmental variables and to determine whether or not it would be feasible, in future studies to develop macroinvertebrate metrics that would indicate stream quality based on the macroinverebrate assemblages and/or components of the assemblages.
