Area of Research: Natural Resources & Water Management
Status: Ongoing

Objectives

  1. a) To provide an integrated assessment of the groundwater salinity risk in the Punkudutivu island and recommend measures for reducing the risk and improving groundwater quality enabling sustainable utilization of the resource. b) To study the hydrochemistry, geochemistry and mineralisation of the Pungudutivu aquifers in relation to seasonal variations of groundwater levels and flow patterns. c) To identify fresh and saline groundwater bodies, their occurrence and temporal behaviour and spatial distribution by means of in-depth geo electrical resistivity studies. d) To generate a conceptual model of spatial and temporal patterns of fresh and saline groundwater and related groundwater flow mechanisms, hydrometeorologic and anthropogenic factors of the island. e) To identify the extent of the salinity problem of groundwater along with spatially incorporating issues such as livelihood of the inhabitants of the Pungudutivu island by collecting, compiling and interpreting available data. f) To propose a mechanism for minimizing the salinization risk, improving the quality and sustainable utilization of the groundwater resources n the Punguduthive island.
