Objectives

  1. a) To determine the prevalence of malnutrition and associated factors among children aged 1 to 5 years in Jaffna district. b) To determine the prevalence of malnutrition in terms of undernutrition [underweight (acute on chronic malnutrition), wasting (acute malnutrition), stunting (chronic malnutrition) and overnutrition in terms of overweight and obesity among children c) To determine the prevalence of anemia by Haemoglobin concentration and iron deficiency anaemia by serum ferritin concentration. d) To determine the prevalence of protein deficiency by serum albumin concentration e) To determine the prevalence of Vitamin A deficiency by Retinol binding protein and serum retinol. f) To determine the prevalence of Zinc deficiency g) To determine the Iodine deficiency disorders by Urinary iodine concentration and goitre rate. h) To assess the relationships of following factors associated with malnutrition such as a. Soci-demographic factor b. Socio-economical factor c. Low birth weight d. Food insecurity e. Mother’s knowledge on EBF and breastfeeding, complimentary foods, nutritious contents of food items f. Influence of Illness g. Dietary patterns and Food Intake and i) Influence of nutritive supplementation on the nutritional status of children
