Objectives

  1. a) To identify and quantify agro chemical residues and heavy metals in major vegetables and milk produced in Nuwara Eliya district. b) To conduct a comprehensive survey in the district to identify cropping patterns, usage (types, amounts, methods of application, frequencies) of pesticides and fertilizers on vegetable. c) To assess the impact of cropping patterns on quality of milk. d) To evaluate the level of pesticide residues and heavy metals present in major types of commercially grown vegetables and milk. e) To identify and quantify pesticide residues and heavy metals present in animal feed including water, grass, fodder, crop residues, and concentrates. f) To assess the levels of agro chemical residues present in major types of vegetables and milk along the food chain from farm to folk. g) To evaluate the effect of beliefs and attitudes of farmers on the use of pesticides and fertilizer. h) To estimate the effect of traditional food processing methods on the reduction of pesticide residues present in vegetables. i) To develop a user friendly rapid method to detect the level of ago chemical residues in milk. j) To disseminate findings to relevant authorities, farmers and stakeholders.
